The Quietest Kitchen Cooker Hood: Elegant and Efficient

Cea mai silențioasă hotă de bucătărie: elegantă și eficientă

A powerful yet quiet cooker hood is one that extracts plenty of air on its normal speed settings, not just on the intensive (booster) function, while making little noise on those same settings. You will find both figures on every hood's EU energy information sheet: the airflow (in m³/h) and the noise (in dB) at minimum speed, at maximum normal speed and in intensive mode. For example, the Haier HADG6CBS4BWIFI chimney hood extracts 624 m³/h at maximum normal speed at 61 dB, and reaches 974 m³/h on booster, where the noise rises to 73 dB. Below we show you how to read these figures, compare a few models and answer the most frequently asked questions.

Choosing an efficient, quiet kitchen cooker hood matters a great deal for everyday comfort, especially in kitchens that open onto the living room. A good hood clears steam and cooking smells quickly, but does so without a noise that drowns out conversation or the television.

What makes a cooker hood quiet: how to read the decibels

Since 2015, cooker hoods sold in the European Union have carried an energy label and a product information sheet, in line with Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 65/2014. On the sheet you will find the noise expressed as "sound power" in decibels (dB), for three situations:

  • minimum speed in normal use – for light cooking or for leaving the hood running once you have finished;
  • maximum speed in normal use – the setting you use when frying or cooking on several burners at once;
  • intensive or booster mode – the most powerful setting, usually used for short periods.

Sound power is not exactly what your ear hears, but it is measured the same way for every model, so it is the best basis for comparison. One useful thing to remember: a difference of 10 dB is perceived, on average, as roughly twice as loud.

Powerful and quiet cooker hoods: a comparison based on official data

We have put three hoods from our store side by side, with the values from their official energy information sheets (the European EPREL database):

Model Airflow min. / max. normal / intensive Noise min. / max. normal / intensive Energy class
Haier HADG6CBS4BWIFI, chimney hood, 60 cm 340 / 624 / 974 m³/h 49 / 61 / 73 dB A++
Haier HATS6CBS4BWIFI, chimney hood, 60 cm 309 / 569 / 883 m³/h 49 / 63 / 73 dB A+
Candy CBT625/2B/1, built-in, 60 cm 209 / 332 m³/h (no booster) 56 / 64 dB B

What the table shows: on its lowest setting, the Haier HADG6CBS4BWIFI moves roughly as much air as the Candy hood does on its highest (340 versus 332 m³/h), but at 49 dB instead of 64 dB. In other words, a hood with a more powerful motor, run on a lower setting, can be quieter than a small hood pushed to its limit. That is why, when you are looking for a "powerful and quiet cooker hood", you should compare the noise at the airflow you actually need, not just the maximum figure in the product title.

Three types of cooker hood that combine design with performance

1. FALMEC Polar Black island hood – premium design and efficiency

This island hood is designed for modern kitchens with the hob on an island. It is cylindrical, 35 cm in diameter, with a black finish, a 280 W motor delivering 800 m³/h, 4 electronically controlled speed settings, LED lighting and a circular metal filter. Its height adjusts between 84 and 124 cm, so you can match it to your ceiling height. Its minimalist style makes it a natural fit for a contemporary home. It is made to order; we will confirm the noise level on each setting from the manufacturer's sheet before you place your order.

2. The built-in downdraft hood – the discreet solution

For those who prefer a minimalist look, a downdraft hood is an excellent choice. It is built straight into the kitchen worktop, next to the hob, and becomes almost invisible when not in use. It draws steam away right at pan level, which is why it is popular in open-plan kitchens, where you do not want a hood hanging above the island. You can read more about how it works and what to know when installing it in our article on the hood that rises from the worktop.

3. Haier single-motor chimney hood – performance and connectivity

This 60 cm chimney hood pairs modern technology with an understated black design. It has 4 speed settings, including a Booster function, with an airflow of up to 974 m³/h in intensive mode, and its Wi-Fi connection lets you control it from your phone. Its energy sheet shows class A++ and 49 dB at minimum speed, or 61 dB at maximum normal speed, so it is a good choice if you want both power and peace and quiet.

The quietest built-in cooker hood: what to check

Built-in hoods (fitted into the wall unit above the hob) are usually more compact, and their airflow varies widely from one model to another. When comparing two built-in models, look at the noise at maximum normal speed and the airflow on that same setting. If your kitchen is small, a model with moderate airflow is enough; if it is large or open to the living room, choose a higher airflow so the hood can work comfortably on its middle settings. For an exact calculation, see our guide on how to size your cooker hood's capacity.

How to keep your cooker hood as quiet as possible at home

  • Choose an airflow with some headroom. A hood that copes with your kitchen on settings 1–2 will be quieter than one that always has to run flat out.
  • Use the duct diameter stated in the manual. A duct that is too narrow, too long or full of bends makes the motor work harder.
  • Opt for rigid ducting with few bends, run as straight as possible to the outlet.
  • Clean the filters at the intervals given in the manual. Clogged grease filters reduce extraction, and charcoal filters (when running in recirculation mode) need replacing regularly.
  • Switch the hood on a few minutes before you start cooking and leave it running for a little while afterwards on a low setting, rather than resorting to the booster.

You will find all the models in our kitchen cooker hoods category, and if you are renovating your kitchen, it is worth choosing them together with your built-in hob, so that the width of the hood matches the hob.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the quietest cooker hood?

There is no single answer, because the noise depends on the setting used. Compare the dB value at maximum normal speed on the energy information sheet. Of the models in the table above, the Haier HADG6CBS4BWIFI has the lowest value at maximum normal speed: 61 dB.

Quiet yet powerful cooker hoods: reviews aside, what really matters?

Two figures, taken together: the airflow at maximum normal speed (not just on booster) and the noise at that same speed. A high-airflow hood working on a low setting is, as a rule, quieter than a small hood running flat out.

The quietest built-in cooker hood: what should I look at?

The noise at maximum normal speed and the airflow on that same setting, both of which are listed on the product information sheet. Also check that the duct diameter in your kitchen matches the one in the hood's manual.

How many decibels does a quiet cooker hood make?

There is no official threshold for "quiet", so the most useful thing is to compare models against one another. For the hoods in the table above, the minimum setting is 49–56 dB, maximum normal speed 61–64 dB and booster 73 dB, which is why intensive mode is only used for short periods.

Where can I find the official noise values for a cooker hood?

On the energy label and the product information sheet, which you can look up by model code in the European EPREL database. If you cannot find the sheet for a model in our store, write to us and we will help.

Whether you choose an island hood, a chimney model or a hood built into the worktop, the best choice is the one that copes with your kitchen on its middle settings. That way you get clean air without disturbing noise, and the booster stays in reserve for the moments when you are cooking intensively.
